THE CLIENT BRIEF
Raising the voice, visibility and effectiveness of the human rights movement in Kenya
The Saba Saba seismic event was the first serious organized challenge to repression through defiance in Kenya, the spirit and courage of the saba saba movement inspires human rights defenders today to stand up for social ills and injustices and defend the realization of the dreams and aspirations of the older generation as espoused in words and deeds. In fact, the Social Justice Centers Working Group has a firm belief and duty to commemorate and educate its members and the country in general, through civil resistance, Kenya has made great strides towards democracy and respect for human rights. However, thirty years on many of the human rights issues remain unresolved; Unresolved access to justice and socioeconomic rights. Nevertheless, the struggle for people-centered democracy continues.
‘Saba Saba - then and now’ documents the perspective of activists who participated in the struggles in the 1990s: their aspirations, their cause and the hurdles they encountered. How did they overcome those hurdles and at what risks did this come? What are the struggles, what is the response of the governments and how are human rights defenders supported? There are lessons learned from then and now.
